Leverage Points: Where to Intervene in a System

Systems thinking starts from a deceptively simple premise: most failures in complex systems aren't caused by bad actors or bad intentions — they're caused by structure. The same structure that produces success in one context reliably produces failure in another.

This is what makes long-range dependencies tractable: a small change in the right place can shift an entire system without degrading through a chain of intermediate states.

Donella Meadows called these intervention points leverage points — and ranked them by power. Changing the numbers in a system (budgets, rules, speeds) is the least effective. Changing the goals, paradigms, or information flows matters far more.
